Explore the Different Areas of Billings, Montana
If you’re moving to Billings, Montana, relocating within the city, or beginning a Billings real estate search, one of your first questions is probably: What are the different areas of Billings actually like?
A map can show you streets and zip codes, but it doesn’t always explain how Billings is laid out—or why two homes that look relatively close on a map can feel like they’re in completely different parts of the city.

The Billings Heights sits primarily north and east of the Rimrocks, creating a natural geographic separation from much of central and west Billings. It’s one of the reasons you’ll often hear locals refer to it simply as “the Heights.”
Although the Heights is part of Billings, it can feel somewhat self-contained. Main Street serves as its primary commercial corridor, with grocery stores, restaurants, medical services, shopping, and everyday conveniences available without regularly needing to cross town.
Compared with West Billings, you’ll find fewer large shopping and entertainment destinations, but most of what you need for everyday life is close by.
The Heights itself is also much larger and more varied than it may first appear on a map.
Housing You’ll Find
- Older established neighborhoods
- Ranch and split-level homes
- Townhomes
- Newer subdivisions & new construction
- Larger single-family homes
- A variety of lot sizes
- Properties toward the outskirts with more open surroundings
Parks, Recreation & Landmarks
Lake Elmo State Park is one of the Heights’ most recognizable recreation areas. The 64-acre reservoir sits within Billings and offers swimming, nonmotorized boating, paddleboarding, fishing, picnicking, birdwatching, and a trail around the lake.
Castle Rock Park is a large community park with athletic fields, courts, playground facilities, and other recreation.
Two Moon Park provides trails and access to the Yellowstone River.

West Billings—or “the West End,” as you’ll often hear locals call it—is a large and continually developing part of the city.
This side of Billings contains one of the city’s largest concentrations of shopping, restaurants, medical services, recreation, and newer residential development. But the West End isn’t simply “the newer part of town.”
Drive across it and you’ll encounter several eras of Billings housing, from established neighborhoods closer to the center of the city to new construction and expanding development farther west.

- Ranch and split-level homes
- Townhomes and condominiums

South/southwest Billings is one of the more varied parts of the city and can be difficult to understand from a map alone.
The area includes established residential neighborhoods, commercial and industrial corridors, local businesses, parks, recreation, and access to the Yellowstone River.
Because the mix can change relatively quickly from one part of South Billings to another, the exact location of a property matters.
